Tony Overman

Tony founded Encader Consulting (now known as TOverman Sustainability) in 2017 after an extensive career in environmental, natural resources management and water sectors.

Tony began his career in environment and sustainability in 1989 as a Fisheries and Wildlife Officer in Melbourne before becoming an investigator in Victoria’s Wildlife Investigations Unit. A stint with the Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service in Canberra and a year travelling the world with wife, Cath, opened his eyes to the scale of our negative impacts on nature. After returning in 1994, they moved to Horsham, where Tony became Parks, Flora and Fauna Planner across the Wimmera and Grampians.

Tony moved to the fledgling Wimmera Catchment Management Authority in 1997 as Water Program Manager and led the establishment of waterway health, floodplain and rural drainage functions across the Wimmera. In 2000, the family (with two boys and one to come) moved to Moriac in the Surf Coast Shire. Tony worked in the Corangamite CMA initially as Waterway Health Coordinator and later as Biodiversity Program Manager.

In 2004, Tony joined the consulting firm SKM, now Jacobs, where he led services for clients across Victoria, SA and Tasmania in natural resource management, corporate sustainability and climate action. In 2008, he joined Barwon Water as Strategy and Sustainability Coordinator, leading the organisation's environmental and sustainability efforts for the next decade.

In 2017, Tony left Barwon Water to continue his passion for working with organisations to tackle complex sustainability challenges through his own consulting business. Since then, he has worked for over thirty clients on more than sixty projects across Victoria and interstate.

Tony has seen and understands the complexity and scale of these challenges. He specialises in facilitating collaborative responses that bring people together to uncover and understand issues, build cohesion around shared goals and co-design practical, efficient solutions that meet diverse needs. These steps are the foundations for commitment to collective impact on challenges that are way beyond the remit of any single entity.

As an experienced consultant with a practical working knowledge of most environmental and sustainability matters, Tony offers an objective, adaptable and efficient approach. He can help leverage the diversity of views and experience of stakeholders to identify the strategic, tactical, and operational aspects of complex issues, providing a solid basis for practical responses.

Tony has a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Honours), a Graduate Certificate in Sustainable Development and a Diploma in Business Management. He is a Certified Environmental Professional (General) of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand, a Certified Climate Active Consultant and a member of the Carbon Market Institute. He is a former Chair of the G21 Environment Pillar and the Barwon Coast Committee of Management.
